“It is an agony for women to be fully conscious of the extent to which they are systematically degraded by men, and to be aware of the way in which this degradation is institutionalized and enforced in their lives.”
Thank you for pointing out there are various levels to internalized misogyny! Many people state they don't condone abuse but then will do other things in the low to moderate risk categories and think it's all harmless.
The worst part is that these women are so often our own mothers, their friends, our grandmothers and aunties, who judge other women for finally breaking the cycle they have all been stuck in for ages.
its funny because sometimes i hear my mother judge and more often speak ill of girls who are doing things in their lives, that i myself would most certainly do.
Its crazy how much they'll hate on us but if a man did the same thing its because he was created to do so and so and that it makes more sense this way, or some religious backing up yk. i can go on forever about this
It’s truly takes a psychological toll on the mind when this behavior comes from family/relative. No feeling is left spared when being a witness to the betrayal of women.
I am so sorry for what you've had to go through with your own sisters. It might have felt hard for them emotionally, but morally, it should have been an easy decision for them. Them even questioning you at all is abhorrent. Bloody religion...
I don't want to smush my own story into yours, but I recently wrote about being an ex-pick me girl and a lot of this stuff came up. I became a feminist quite young, in my teens, but it took me many years to realise how much internalised misogyny I was still carrying, and how little I was actually caring for the women in my life. It's crazy how even women who agree with feminist ideology can still keep feeding the patriarchy.
Wow, that was an eye opening read. I never thought of how the different levels of "pick me" have varying levels of danger. I honestly won't be able to witness internalized misogyny again without thinking of this post. Great read!!!
Thank you for this, which category do you think the 'girls girls' that act like every girls biggest supporter but actually do so to hide their deep rooted envy and insecurity and turn on those same women the second a man is involved? I believe they would fall under the sophisticated sycophant but maybe a different variation of one. Almost like a less blatant type!
i’m so sorry you had to deal with such a traumatic experience in your life and have it reappear in your face just to question how you feel and what you experience to be pushed to the back burner. the levels of internalized misogyny is insane and too see it in practice in real time is honestly insane sometimes bc you feel like you’re the only one who sees it and you’re going crazy. thank you for sharing about your experience and i hope all is well! ^^

I have hella run ins with "the righteous enabler" made me hate the church more than I already did.

Love this post, and your level-o-meter.

I agree. I’ve realized lately so many women are part of the problem- and won’t admit it.
